A 1973 Dodge Challenger just hit Silver Sport Transmissions’ (SST) shop floor and will be their first E-body to receive the new Tremec TKX five-speed. After months of research and development to make it a no-cut fit, the proof is about to be in the pudding with an actual transmission tunnel testimonial for Mopar’s most sleek and sporty body style.
While its predecessor, the TKO, required some massaging to fit the E-body’s none-too-generous underside, the TKX’s more svelte figure should nestle in without the whizz of a cutoff wheel. SST’s proprietary shifter tower relocation will allow it to slide right in the factory shifter hump and accommodate an obligatory pistol grip handle.
Adding to the ease of installation is SST’s PerfectFit kit which includes a gathering of gear to switch out a stale four-speed. In the box are the TKX, an STX shifter, pilot bearing, hardware, isolator mount, reverse light connector, speedometer connector, crossmember, clutch alignment tool, driveshaft, slip-yoke, instructions, and market-leading warranty.
A 600 lb-ft torque rating and 7,500 RPM shift capacity have already made the TKX a natural fit behind both vintage V8s and modern Hemi swaps. In fact, it’s been so popular that lead times have pushed out to roughly six weeks. Compare that to the usual two- or three-day wait and it’s obvious that these fine five-speeds are flying off the shelves.
Luckily, there’s still time to get in line and overdrive into summer. Start with a quick quote and let the experts at SST take it from there.
