Even though the manual transmission has pretty much gone the way of the dodo in modern factory performance cars, the three-pedal tango is still as popular as ever across hot rodding. Not that long ago, a stick-shift swap to an updated overdrive unit took many jaunts to the junkyard along with a heavy dose of home-grown ingenuity.
Silver Sport Transmissions has all but eliminated the seemingly infinite trips to scrapyards and parts stores with their PerfectFit kits. Designed in-house with their own engineering, each PerfectFit is available with every single part needed to add a pedal to your Dodge or Plymouth. In fact, they’ve even gone a step further in overdrive delivery with a lineup of automatics as well.
Most of the main Mopars are covered with packages for the Tremec TKX 5-speed, Magnum 6-speed, or A41 automatic including the 1964-1966 A-body, 1967-1976 A-body, 1962-1965 B-body, 1966-1970 B-body, 1971-1974 B-body, and 1970-1974 E-body.
There are also the TR-4050 5-speed and A41X auto for four-wheel-drive Ram and Jeep models. In total, more than forty different configurations are available with the variety of engine and transmission combinations possible.
And don’t go thinking these modern gearboxes are weak. After all, Anderson Dick of FuelTech fame has a blown 1972 Plymouth ‘Cuda that’s PerfectFit TKX-equipped. “I bought it from Silver Sport and they supplied the whole kit, like bolt-on, and it was really impressive,” he says of its all-in-one ease. If it’s good enough to stand up behind an 871 blower sitting atop a mean 340, it’s good enough for us.
