If you were at the 2018 MCACN show you know that this show gets better every year. Additionally, 2018 marks the tenth anniversary for the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. This year’s show was dedicated to the best of the best from the muscle car era. Over 500 vehicles were shown in the Donald E. Stephen’s Convention Center in Rosemont, IL.
At this show, cars are judged in many different categories. Bob and Vicki Ashton put together a wonderful variety of eye candy! One great aspect of this show is you can only show your vehicle every three years. So every year, there is something new to see. This year’s show was dedicated to Steve Juliano who passed this year. His collection of the Rapid Transit cars was the first cars that you saw as you walked in, all were prototype show cars. These cars shown are really as cool as it gets! The style of these rides demand attention, and something a Mopar lover might now ever see again.
To get even a bit more odd was George Barris “Corky” ’66 Barracuda was just a blast from the past! This was sitting in the atrium before the show gates. As you walked in a little farther you came across the display the 1968 LO23 and BO23 Hemi Darts and Barracudas. Herb McCandless was by his Mr 4-Speed Dart and was a Gentleman to talk with! Walk a bit farther and you came across a wall of Hemi cars, each and every one was a car to drool over.
Mopar Alley was another section that had cars that you could dream about what the Muscle car era was like watching these beauties drive on the streets! Jerry Kasper had a display of Skips Fiesta Drive-In, which was the Mel’s Drive-In from the movie “American Graffiti,” in Park, Illinois, when it was open you could go there on the weekend and watch muscle car after muscle car drive through. Mr. Norm was also there selling memorabilia from his Grand Spaulding Dodge dealership. He is in his 80s now but still sharp as ever!
The long-time owners section also had beautiful cars, and the Hemi cars were represented there also. One of the highlights of the show is when it’s over and the cars are all starting up to go into their trailers for their ride home, the noise of all the engines is deafening! If you haven’t been to this show yet, you’re missing one of the best shows on the planet! It goes for 2 days and to see the cars and talk to the proud owners is a real treat!
