A ¾” minimum size is recommended, but 1” is available too. Shaft shape is important as well depending on application. Double D, splined, and smooth are the most prevalent. Universal joints (U-joints) connect it all together and the same shapes are offered to match up to the various shafts.
Standard single joints can afford 35 degrees of angle while doubles can handle up to 70. Selection needs to be made with steering assembly length, routing, and support all in mind.
