The real magic of the G3 Hemi engine is in the cylinder heads. All modern Hemis feature plentiful flow numbers, but atop that mountain of air movement is the Big Gas Engine (BGE) head which basically came in three configurations.
The first was fitted to 2014+ trucks and 2018+ cars with the 6.4L and got drilled for a standard intake manifold. Another very similar casting topped 6.2L Hellcat engines with a hole pattern for the supercharger. An enhanced version of that Hellcat BGE head made its way onto Redeye models.
All are a terrific platform for power, so much so that Blackbird Performance Products uses them on their Race Spec engines that range from 600+ to 1,650+ horsepower. “We’ve found that these factory castings, if they’re brand new, they’re pristine castings and you’re using all new parts in them, that they just work marvelously,” says Blackbird head Geoff Turk.
Blackbird offers two versions that are brand new Ma Mopar castings with new valves, new PSI valve springs, and new titanium spring retainers. One offering is akin to the 2014+ truck/2018+ car head and one is like the Redeye edition. Blackbird’s Redeye head, however, does get the added benefit of a dual bolt pattern so an intake manifold or supercharger will bolt right up.
Both are CNC ported with a minor bowl blending plus valve job. And, because they’re brand new castings, no core charge is required. It’s yet another example of Blackbird’s smart use of factory parts to go fast. Snake oil sellers need not apply.
