Video: Callies Simplifies Connecting Rod Bolt Stretch

Automotive forums are full of torque specs, sequences, and stretch stipulations for critical fasteners, but a recent video has the experts at Callies Performance Products stepping out of the comment threads and onto their shop floor. The simple version is this: stretch is king.

On a popular 6.700” rod, Callies sets the benchmark at 75 lb-ft on their twice-daily calibrated torque wrenches. However, that mark is just a reference that helps their techs get to the ultimate end goal of proper stretch. Those rods with ARP hardware call for 0.0055” to 0.0065” but stretch specs can vary based on journal size or bolt used.

DIYers would be careful to note that lube is an important variable. Different slick stuff changes friction, so identical torque can produce different stretch depending on the goo used. Callies specifies ARP Ultra Torque (P/N 100-9910) on the threads and beneath the bolt head.

Moparites could put this advice to work with a set of Callies’ Compstar H-beam rods (P/N CSE6760FS3D5AH) which are forged 4340 steel, 6.760” long, and fitted with ARP L19 bolts, exactly the kind of fasteners that deserve engineered elongation, not an uneducated estimation.

I think we can all admit that rotating assembly hardware isn’t the place for close enough, so give those bolts the hot yoga they deserve by letting the gauge guide the pose. After all, stretch is king and a snapped rod sure would be a royal pain in the crankcase.
