There’s a reason you don’t see high-horse drag cars running points ignition systems. No doubt, we love ourselves a single-point distributor hanging off the side of a Slant Six just as much as the next guy, but those little contacts just don’t cut it for the big boys.
Creeping up on four-digit power figures or five-digit RPMs requires rock solid spark that is both reliable and energetic. Capacitive discharge ignition (CDI) has been a go-to for many years, but not all are made equal.
FuelTech specializes in such systems and their FTSPARK CDI can fire off the hottest flames with proven applications in the realm of 5,000 horsepower. At 750 millijoule (mJ) of energy and 140 amps of current in the primary coil, this little black box is roughly five times more powerful than a typical run-of-the-mill CDI.
Versions exist for four, six, and eight-cylinder applications with maximum RPM ratings of 22,500, 15,000, and 11,250 respectively. Obviously, a standard oil-filled canister coil is out of the question and FuelTech’s CDI coils, one per cylinder, are recommended.
Integration with a FuelTech ECU makes the most sense in most applications, but the FTSPARK can also be used with others’ engine controllers. Either way, it’s available without a wiring harness, with an unterminated harness, with a connector kit, or with a specific FT550/600 PRO harness.
