All of us at Mopar Connection are huge believers in equipping your vintage Dodge or Plymouth with an overdrive gear; we’ve got Silver Sport Transmissions’ A41 4-speed overdrive in our Brazen Charger; an American Powertrain Tremec 6-speed Magnum in the Orange Crush ’72 Dart Swinger; and even a uniquely re-geared 4th-speed overdrive in the Comeback ‘Cuda. But none of these overdrives can handle up to 2,000 horsepower (yes, that’s two thousand) like that of the Gear Vendors overdrive system.
In fact, the Gear Vendors overdrive is so successful for high horsepower applications that it’s become possibly the most commonly-used aftermarket part by all of the winningest participants of Hot Rod Drag Week, including champions Jeff Lutz and Dave Schroederr, who used their Gear Vendors both while cruising at highway speeds between venues as well as down the track, since the GV unit can be used as a gear-splitter while being raced.
In this video taken at the Gear Vendors Overdrive/Underdrive booth during SEMA at the Las Vegas Convention Center in 2018, the guys at Internal Combustion interview Mike McCarthy who walks them through the .78 overdrive that can retrofit to just about any transmission – automatic or manual – on the market.
