Not all Mopars like pavement. Jeep has been producing off road vehicles for over 75 years. Jeep started its life as a go anywhere military vehicle and have continued to build on those roots. Jeeps motto of Go Anywhere. Do Anything. really says it all. But like many enthusiasts, Jeep owners also like to modify their vehicles to be more capable on and off-road. Silver Sport Transmissions now offers a 4WD TREMEC TR-4050 PerfectFit Kit for Jeep Wrangler TJs to help fix one of the weakest links.
If you own a 1997-2007 Jeep Wrangler you probably have encountered the sloppy shifting and poor gearing of the factory manual transmissions. Throw in some oversized tires and few off-road obstacles and that transmission performs even worse. With many units having high miles or needing rebuilt from years of abuse, rebuilding you factory transmission is not always the answer. Before there was not much choice but Silver Sport Transmissions is changing that.

Silver Sport Transmissions recently picked up a 2002 Jeep TJ to test the new TREMEC TR-4050 in. Not only did they do the swap and design a bolt in kit from the pilot bearing to the driveshaft, but they also took it to the Easter Jeep Safari to flex its capabilities. You can read all about their adventure in our previous article Silver Sport Transmissions Invades The 2019 Easter Jeep Safari.
The 2002 Jeep TJ Silver Sport Transmissions picked up had a few modifications done by the previous owner. The most notable was the lift and increase in tire size from 28” to 33”. Not only does the taller tire throw the gearing off, but the weight also caused the Jeep to feel sluggish during take off. The TR-4050 gearing would help not only by giving more torque down low, but also allow for a better overdrive gear to lower RPMs on the highway.
Maybe you decided you needed more power in your Jeep TJ and decided to throw an Edelbrock Performer 4.0 head on and some other goodies. You may have more power but that factory transmission probably is not going to handle it well. The TR-4050 can handle up to 425ftlbs of torque, giving you peace of mind that on your drive to work or in the middle of a hill climb your transmission will not explode on you.
There are multiple reasons why the TR-4050 is going to be the leader in off-road manual transmissions but one of our favorites is the short throw shifter. Each transmission is conveniently equipped with Silver Sport Transmissions patented STX short throw shifter for precise shifting. The short throw will allow you to select gears quicker with better feel on and off the road.
