Variable valve timing (VVT) on the G3 Hemi was introduced in 2009 with the arrival of the Eagle platform. Without a doubt, its ability to advance or retard camshaft timing has been a huge boon for stock and lightly modified engines. However, those looking for maximum performance from a larger aftermarket cam are usually required to limit or lock out the phasing mechanism to avoid valve-to-piston contact.
Blackbird Performance Products came up with an even better solution in their timing set that eliminates the phaser entirely (P/N BBP-007-FK). For those building a hotter Hemi, it’s basically the only purpose-engineered assembly on the market right now with a slew of advantages over the OEM VVT setup.
First off, it gets rid of the heavy phaser entirely, replacing it with an old-school gear that has a built-in tone ring for the cam sensor. It’s simpler, it’s lighter, and it’s much more like what you’re used to when swapping timing sets on a vintage big block or small block.
It’s also more adjustable. While the factory lower sprocket is stuck with a single location, Blackbird’s has nine positions for precision camshaft degreeing.
The full kit includes the top sprocket, ARP cam bolt/washer, thrust bearing, bottom sprocket, OEM chain, and tensioner. Customers can also just get the top sprocket kit (P/N BBP-007-TS) which includes the top sprocket, thrust bearing, and bolt/washer or the bottom sprocket (P/N BBP-007-SO) by itself.
It’s yet another example of the affordable innovation coming from Blackbird. Give them a call to help make your G3 Hemi-powered dreams come true.
