It seems like factory parts rarely fit as perfectly as intended once the modification momentum gets moving on a muscle car. One upgrade leads to another, which requires yet another, and the train rolls on from there. Once an aftermarket dash, front suspension, steering, and modern engine enter the equation, things like OEM steering columns become all but inadequate.
Flaming River has been catering to the custom car culture since the beginning and fully understands that some vehicles just have to have components that aren’t available straight out of the catalog. In those cases, a built-to-order column is the only way to go.
The process couldn’t be easier with their design-your-own-column forms. Filling in the blanks gives them all the information they need to manufacture a one-off assembly that can nail form and function in almost any application.
Required entries for something like a custom tilt key column include overall length, wire slot location, firewall stick-out, shift style, neutral safety switch location, output shaft size, steering wheel mounting scheme, and finish.
Starting with something that already exists in Flaming River’s repertoire is probably the quickest path, but scratch-built is among their capabilities as well. It really just depends on how mild or wild someone wants to get.
Completed forms can be emailed or faxed to tech support. After review, customers are contacted for any other details or sign-offs. Whether it’s powder-coated or polished, the final product should be a perfect fit with performance to boot.
