If you are an automotive enthusiast of any breadth, then you have heard of the Woodward Dream Cruise. Touted as the largest car show in the world, if you find yourself on the actual cruise day, which was August 17, 2024, you would not doubt it in the least.
The Dream Cruise takes place on Woodward Avenue, a huge avenue that shoots out of downtown Detroit and heads Northwest for about 30 miles. The main cruising happens though usually from about 8 miles on the south side to Pontiac, Michigan on the north end. Doing a “loop” is usually a run all the way south, and then all the way north and back.
What many do not understand that in many spots, Woodward Avenue is 4 or 5 lanes wide in each direction! And there are small frontage roads along most of the route, allowing for easy parking to watch the cars drive by.
For the past two years, we’ve been pre-occupied with family matters to partake in the actual Dream Cruise event, but being that Woodward is just an open road, there are people out there all week cruising just back and forth.
It gets heavier and heavier as the week goes on. But you’ll see cars out there earlier in the week you will not see later, because the traffic ramps up to such and extent that the huge road becomes a slow-moving parking lot.
We feel the best time to fully enjoy cruising and seeing the amazing cars really is Wednesday through Friday. You can still make a loop and enjoy cruising. On Saturday you better make sure that your cooling system is prepared for hours of sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
This year, we setup in our normal spot, just north of 13 Mile Road on the northbound side of Woodward. In our experience, we have seen more cars head north and not return south. So, we setup our camera spot accordingly. If you do likewise, you will never be disappointed.
We plenty of friends come and hang out, get pizza or what not and just watch all the incredible cars go by. One minute it might be a new Demon 170, the next a four-door Valiant. There really is something for everyone! Don’t wait to check it out. Tomorrow isn’t promised, so get out there and cruise your Mopars.
