Uncontrolled heat and friction are among the deadliest engine diseases. Nowhere are the two more prone to exist than at the cylinder wall level. Between a locomotive-like piston and the explosive blast of combustion, the cylinder bears the brunt of some extreme temperature and pressure changes. Keeping it all under control are three little piston rings that are simple in nature, yet complex by design.
The top ring’s primary objective is to seal in compression gases. On the other end, the bottom ring is present to regulate oil spread on the cylinder wall. The ring in the middle helps both of its neighbors in compression, oil, and heat control.
No one knows this silent but significant trio better than Hastings. Founded in 1915, their focused effort on this singular product has given them an upper hand in designing some of the best rings money can buy. Hastings Performance Rings metric ring packs are up to the task for modern performance engine applications like the G3 Hemi.
The stainless steel series features a gas-nitrided 1.2mm stainless top ring, spheroidal graphite cast iron second ring, and 3.0mm Flex Vent Control oil ring that’s chrome-plated carbon steel. The steel series is similar, but comes with a 1.5mm top compression ring made from SAE9254 alloy.
With so much of the engine’s success literally riding on these three carefully-crafted components, it only makes sense to stick with the experts at Hastings. Check out the full lineup at Summit Racing for details on pricing and availability.
