
We’re just as “give me Hemi or give me death” as the next guy, but the power being pumped out of these little 3.0L Hurricane straight sixes is impressive nonetheless. And, undoubtably, with impressive power will come impressive swaps into a great many platforms that may eventually include muscle cars.
Those swaps, however, won’t be quite as straightforward as a drop-in G3 Hemi with one big obstacle being the Hurricane’s gasoline direct injection (GDI) system. Much like a common rail diesel, GDI engines have high-powered fuel injectors that shoot straight into the combustion chamber. Those injectors require special electronic devices to deliver high voltage and current; a typical aftermarket EFI computer won’t do it.
Enter FuelTech with their new PRO HV-8 injector driver, the missing link for any GDI swap. This module makes firing those special injectors possible while it “blends high-voltage actuation, intelligent peak-and-hold control, and advanced diagnostics into a single compact and robust platform.”
It can also control a GDI high pressure fuel pump which, in the case of the Hurricane, is either a single or dual-pump system on the side of the block that boosts pressure north of 5,000 psi.
What would a FuelTech setup look like in a standalone Hurricane swap? We’d start with the FT600 ECU since it can help control the 8HP75 eight-speed automatic, then add the PRO HV-8 to handle the GDI. From there, fuel strategy would be tunable just like any other EFI. Now if we can just get our hands on one of those Hurricrates…
