Exhaust systems used to be somewhat of an afterthought. Upon completion of a restoration or header installation, cars were often taken to the local muffler shop for a budget set of pipes that would haphazardly snake their way through the underbody or, at the very least, dump in front of the rear axle. Flow efficiency, fitment, and a factory look might not have been the priorities so much as just directing the exhaust towards the back half of the car.
Since 1983, Flowmaster has been working to change that with a product lineup meant to maximize both form and function from the headers to the tips. Their use of mandrel bending minimizes bend distortion, thereby making the pipes look better, fit better, and flow better. Furthermore, individual components like pre-bent tailpipes are available separately for those that want to piece together a custom system.
Recently added to the “builder components” section of their catalog are tailpipes for 1963-1974 Mopar A-bodies and 1962-1974 Mopar B-bodies. Designed for a factory-like fitment, these 16-gauge aluminized steel tubes exit under the rear bumper for a classic muscular look.
A-body pipes are 2.5” while the B-bodies get 3” due to a more spacious underside. Paired with a universal X-pipe kit and some Flowmaster mufflers, these tailpipes could be the trumpets for anything from a Hemi-swapped Dart to a big-block Belvedere. It’s the perfect pairing of custom fit and professional finish to renovate your rumble.
