Aluminum Hemi and Wedge blocks are flying off the shelves at Bill Mitchell Products (BMP). The long-awaited return of a race-ready aluminum block comes at a time when the muscle car industry is as hot as ever and ripe for quality aftermarket engine block options. The BMP pieces are as quality as they come with a 357-T6 aluminum casting that’s poured in a state-of-the-art foundry.
“We have shipped [approximately] 50 blocks since September with another 20 this month and 20 next month,” says Mitchell himself. Clearly, the absence of a capable block for so many years has the Mopar faithful screaming for more. Even our friends overseas are getting in on the fun with two Hemi lungs shipping to Australia the first week of January.
Blocks come with a rough bore of 4.240” or 4.490” on both the Hemi and Wedge versions. Deck height is a factory 10.720”, as is the cam position. Billet main caps are standard and as-shipped weights are right around the 140 pounds mark which should be about 100 pounds slimmer than a vintage cast iron unit.
So what’s a guy or gal gotta do to get one of these things in time for racing season? “Current lead time is [approximately] 4 weeks but the plan is to have them on the shelf,” Mitchell explains. Order one now and you should have time to dress it and be wheels-up in the spring.
