It seems like restorations never really are quite complete. There’s always one more improvement to make. Or a clamp to replace. Or a fluid to change. Or, in Vinny P.’s case, a transmission to swap. While he and Mike P. originally restored this striking Lemon Twist 1972 Plymouth Duster with a factory-correct 727 Torqueflite, that column shifter didn’t hold command for very long.
Silver Sport Transmissions (SST) was tasked with the upgrade, not only from two pedals to three, but to something with a bit more highway friendliness. An SST Tremec TKO PerfectFit™ Kit for 1964-1976 Mopar A-Bodies was a natural selection, touting a 30% to 50% increase in fuel mileage, reduced engine wear, and decrease noise levels. Installation practically couldn’t be easier as the complete kit includes a transmission, driveshaft, crossmember, bellhousing, flywheel, clutch kit, pedals, shifter handle, and more.
According to the glowing note Vinny sent to SST, with the TKO positioned between the Duster’s 360 Magnum and it’s 3.55 rear gear, 65 mph cruising happens at just 2,000 RPM. Furthermore, the car was able to retain a stock look while performing like a brand-new vehicle. Vinny summarized his SST experience with this:
It was a pleasure to do business with you and the staff at Silver Sport Transmissions. Everyone there has made this large purchase painless and right on target. I couldn’t be happier with my TKO and the kit you sent with it. Everything fit together perfectly. It has performed well above my expectations. My car performs excellent, smooth – no complaints!
